ADENYA/OBOM PROJECT

Project in the Eastern Region of Ghana

ADENYA/OBOM

Along the main Koforidua-Akropong Highway in the Eastern Region of Ghana are several exists that lead to many clusters of villages. Two villages of interest to the DRO Ministries in this area are Adenya and Obom, off the Nyansiso exit of the above-named highway.

From the exit, Adenya is approximately 3.1 miles and has a population of about 500 people, and Obom is approximately 5.2 miles with a population of about 800 people. The inhabitants of both villages are predominantly farmers with most of them living in mud and bamboo houses, while some of them live on their farmland. Only a few houses are made of cement blocks.

NATURE OF ROADS

The nature of the roads leading to these villages are very deplorable, hence only a few cars ply those routes once in a while. As a result, the inhabitants have resorted to using motorbikes as their main means of transportation, while using tricycles to carry goods from one place to another. Even at that, not much of these modes of transportation is available due to the poor economic state of the people. In effect, multiple people are forced to sit on these motorbikes and tricycles which pose a danger to their lives at any given time.

SCHOOL IN ADENYA

There is a school situated in the Adenya village that serves children both in Adenya and surrounding communities, as far back as 1.5 miles toward the Nyansiso exit. The same situation exists in the village of Obom where school children walk a minimum of 1.3 miles every morning and afternoon to and from school. These children are mostly worn out by the time they get to school in the mornings and also by the time they reach home in the evenings after school.

HEADTEACHER’S REPORT

The headteacher of the school in the Obom village recounted to the DRO team how frustrating it is to journey to and from the school every weekday, and also how unsafe it is for these children to ply the bushy and deteriorated roads every day, with some children walking unaccompanied by any adult.

Some of the children that were captured by the lenses of the DRO team had no shoes on, while others did not have school bags for their books and other educational materials.

ACCESS TO POTABLE DRINKING WATER

Another shared difficulty in both villages is the absence of potable drinking water which has forced them to consume from unwholesome water outlets, posing so many health hazards to both the young and the old.

The people of Adenya mostly rely on rainwater which comes only during the rainy season (a maximum of about 6 months each year) and struggle to find water in the remaining months of the year. As a result, one village elder dedicated himself to finding donors to support the community get access to water but his efforts only yielded a limited amount of help.

He was able to get a water reservoir for the community and also get help to start a bore-hole water project but help has ceased for some years now. He implored the DRO Ministries team to come to their aid and continue the water project for them to reduce the annual outbreaks of water-borne diseases in the community.

OBOM STREAM

In Obom village, however, there is an isolated stream located in a very dense bush, very far from the community, which serves the village and five other communities. This water source is used by both humans and animals, and is often crossed by motorbikes plying that route. The water is unsafe for human consumption but it is the only hope for the community at this time, and the journey to the stream is also quite dangerous because of the bushy and isolated nature of the road leading to it.

The leaders of the community appealed to the DRO Ministries to come to their aid by helping them secure a more hygienic source of drinking water.
